celebrated the groundbreaking for a CancerTreatment Center that will revolutionize the delivery of cancer care in the mid-Hudson Region. Called “a building ofhope, comfort and inspiration” by SLCH President and CEO Allan E. Atzrott, the facility will offer comprehensive, cutting-edge treatment in a patient-focused environment. The Center, located on the grounds of SLCH’s Cornwall campus, is a joint venture between SLCH and a leading radiation oncology group. It is expected to open in fall 2009. The 20,000 square-foot, $17 million facility will centralize and enhance the services currently provided by SLCH’s successful cancer program, and will be the first in the area to offer TomoTherapy – state-of-the-art technology that enables clinicians to target radiation to specific areas with unsurpassed precision. This minimizes damage to healthy tissue, reduces the side effects often caused by radiation therapy and can produce better patient outcomes. In addition to advanced radiation modalities, the Center will feature infusion/chemotherapy services,community and patient education conference suites, physicians’ offices and retail space to serve the special needs of oncology patients. A panel of local cancer survivors has provided input on the project since its inception. “Through strong partnerships, the support of our community, the dedication of our medical staff and the hard work of many who share our vision, we’re able to embark on this important initiative,” said Atzrott. “A diagnosis of cancer affects not only the patient, but the entire family. Cancer treatment usuall requires many visits, and traveling for care – sometimes on a daily basis -- is tiring and stressful. Our new Cancer Center will ease the journey, enabling patients to receive leading-edge care, comfort and support right here in our community.” |
