Auxiliary Event Shines Spotlight on Hospital and Local Celebrity Talent
das

The soul of Marvin Gaye, smoothness of Bobby  Darin and intensity of Queen were brought to the stage by local celebrities and guests at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital (SLCH) Auxiliary’s recent Karaoke & Cocktails event at Torches. The event attracted elected officials, hospital and physician leadership and friends, and raised several thousand dollars to benefit SLCH initiatives to enhance facilities and programs for the community.

Local celebrities served specialty drinks and hors’douvres with the goal of collecting the most tips for their service. One of the highlights of the evening was a special performance of one of Marvin Gaye’s earlier classics, Hitch Hike, by SLCH President and CEO Allan E. Atzrott. Dressed in black with Chuck Taylor high-tops, Atzrott performed the classic assisted by a cadre of backup singers. “On the 25th anniversary of Gaye’s death, I wanted to honor his memory with this performance,” said Atzrott. “This was fun. It’s interesting how music brings people together. Those who didn’t sing were entertained and those who did, got to unleash their inner rock star. I think we achieved our goal this evening … to have fun while raising money for the hospital.” said Atzrott. He later joined City of Newburgh Mayor Nick Valentine in a performance of Bobby Darin’s classic Beyond the Sea. Both were advised by the crowd to keep their daytime jobs!

“The smiles on everyone’s faces were the highlight of my evening,” said Sue Sullivan, Vice President, Development and Government Affairs, Executive Director, Foundation. “Friends let their hair down, enjoyed themselves and showed off their talents for a good cause.”

SLCH Auxiliary President Barbara Mehar was joined by her husband Dr. Gurinder Mehar in a sweet duet of Under the Boardwalk by The Drifters. Their performance was followed by a lively rendition of ABBA’s Dancing Queen by SLCH Auxiliary board members. “This evening was a great success,” said Barbara Mehar. “It was a wonderful time … good friends, food and music were a great combination for a memorable evening.”
