HEART ATTACK RISK - Simple Test Offers Clues

Calcium scoring
— a powerful tool in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease — is now available to our community at a discount, as part of SLCH’s commitment to enhance heart health in our region. The simple test takes under 10 minutes and uses advanced imaging technology to provide a three-dimensional image of the heart that can help doctors evaluate a patient’s risk for heart attack. More than 60 million Americans suffer from some form of cardiovascular disease, and each year 700,000 people die from heart disease.

The detection of calcium plaque can indicate the presence and extent of coronary artery disease. When diagnosed early enough, coronary disease can be slowed through a physician-guided treatment plan that may include lifestyle changes and/or medication. A calcium scoring exam may be particularly beneficial to those who have risk factors associated with heart disease. These include:

  • Men 45 and older
  • Women 55 and older
  • Family history of heart disease
  • Smoking
  • High cholesterol
  • Low HDL (“good” cholesterol)
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Inactive lifestyle
  • Overweight
Ask your primary care physician or cardiologist for a prescription for the painless test, which uses a CT scanner to identify the plaque buildup. The results are sent to the ordering physician, who can discuss the findings and recommend any follow-up treatment. Since calcium scoring is considered an elective screening, it is not covered by most health insurance plans. The cost to patients is typically $125 to $200, but SLCH has reduced the fee to $75 for a limited time (expires 12/30/2009). Patients who have a prescription for a calcium scoring test may call 458-4000 to make an appointment.
