SLCH’s Center for Cardiac Rehabilitation has earned the “distinction of excellence” from the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, ensuring patients they’re getting the best care in the region.

Serving small groups of patients at its new site, located at 575 Hudson Valley Avenue (near Stewart Airport) in New Windsor, the Center for Cardiac Rehabilitation offers monitored exercise and education to those who have had a heart attack, bypass surgery, angina, valve repair or replacement, and angioplasty. Our Cardiac Rehab team includes registered nurses, exercise physiologists, dietitians, social workers, who work closely with physicians to ensure a continuum of quality care for you. We have recently added a “women-only” class, where women can exercise privately with other women.

Chances are, you will see it happen.
In the US, about 1000 people every day suffer sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). You've probably seen what this looks like on TV. But when it happens to someone right in front of you, whether to a loved one or a stranger, a work colleague or a customer, it is a sight you never forget. More than anything, you want to help. And you can. You are the victim's best chance for survival.

As part of its commitment to improve cardiac outcomes in our region, SLCH has launched the Caring Hearts AED Program to increase the number of Automated External Defibrillators available in workplaces and public spaces. Victims of SC A are unresponsive, lose consciousness, stop breathing, and have no pulse. Most often, the victim is suffering from a heart rhythm disorder called ventricular fibrillation (VF). VF can happen to anyone-even someone who appears perfectly healthy. Between 85% and 90% of sudden cardiac arrest victims die because the three-minute life-saving window is often too short for emergency medical personnel to arrive. The key to survival is immediate access to a defibrillator and someone who has been trained to use it. In this case, the victim needs CPR and defibrillation-an electric shock to correct the heart's rhythm-as soon as possible. Ideally, they need YOU to give it to them.

Under the program, businesses and organizations may purchase an AED at a significantly reduced cost, and SLCH will provide the necessary training to the purchasers' employees. Should a customer, client, visitor or employee experience sudden cardiac arrest, the business or organization, and its staff, would be ready to provide potentially life-saving assistance. AEDs in public places where laypersons can use them-is already a stunning success story. In airplanes, airports, casinos, hotels, office buildings, restaurants, retail stores, houses of worship and other public places, AEDs are saving lives all over the world. The early defibrillation they enable is far more successful for sudden cardiac arrest victims than CPR alone, providing survival rates up to 70%. In any place people gather, you should have access to a defibrillator, and you should know how to use it. You have fire extinguishers and smoke alarms. You have telephones to call the police. You have first-aid kits. You should also have a defibrillator.
