  Be the Match

Be the match…save a life. SLCH’s Vice President of Human Resources, Deborah Turner’s, daughter-in-law was recently diagnosed with AML, a type of Leukemia. Breana, 35, married to Randy Turner and mother to three young sons ages 8, 5 and 2 needs a stem cell transplant to fight her battle against cancer.

We know that cancer is devastating to the entire family. Thousands of people depend on bone marrow/stem cell donations to give them the chance for a cure.

Join us at the Newburgh campus lobby and show your support with a simple swab of the mouth.

February 22, 2011
10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
All you need is to:

  1. Be between the ages of 18 and 60
  2. Be willing to donate to any patient in need
  3. Meet the health guidelines
For more information, please contact Liz Zurlnick at (845) 568-2232 or visit www.marrow.org or www.youtube.com/user/bethematch to learn more.

Every year, more than 10,000 patients in the U.S. are diagnosed with life-threatening diseases such as leukemia or lymphoma for which a marrow or cord blood transplant from an unrelated donor may be their best or only hope of a cure.

Most patients (about 70 percent) in need of a transplant do not have a matching donor in their family. They depend on the National Donor Program’s Be The Match Registry® to find an unrelated donor or cord blood unit.

To be added to the Bone Marrow donor registry – it is just a simple swap of your cheek.

  Deployed Father Watches Birth via Skype at SLCH

On Tuesday, January 18, the Birthing Center received a request unlike anything they had ever heard before. Mom-to-be, Kimberly Tennant wanted to Skype the birth of her first child to husband Captain Matthew Tennant, across the world in Korea.

With the cooperation of Dr. Custodio Borgueta, Mid-Wife Clarice Schwartz and the technological expertise of the SLCH IT Department, the happy couple was “together” for the birth of Jackson Matthew Tennant.

“Everyone at the hospital from the nurses to the IT guys couldn’t have been more wonderful,” said Kimberly. “As soon as the baby was born, I held him up to the computer screen for Matthew to see; it was such a special moment.”

Please join us in congratulating all those involved in this wonderful occurrence!

At St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital we continually strive to improve the quality of care and service that we provide to your patients and to you.   Risk Assessment for Inherited Breast and Ovarian Cancer Mandated for Coverage as Preventative Care Service

Effective for dates of service September 23, 2010 and after, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) otherwise known as health care reform (HCR), includes provisions requiring coverage of preventive services at no cost. Additional guidelines have been included under preventive care services and are being covered by third party payers to ensure compliance with the law.

Genetic counseling and assessment for women at increased risk for inherited breast or ovarian cancer has recently been added to the Preventive Service Health Care Reform Recommendations. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that women whose family history is associated with an increased risk for deleterious mutations in BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes be referred for genetic counseling and evaluation for BRCA testing. Suggested ICD-9 codes include V16.3, V16.41, V16.8 or V26.33.

About two percent of adult women in the general population have an increased-risk family history as defined here. Women with none of these family history patterns have a low probability of having a deleterious mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes.

The USPSTF guidelines for referral for genetic counseling and evaluation are:

  1. Having two first-degree relatives with breast cancer, one of whom received the diagnosis at age 50 years or younger;
  2. A combination of at least three first- or second-degree relatives with breast cancer regardless of age at diagnosis;
  3. A combination of both breast and ovarian cancer in first- and second- degree relatives;
  4. A first-degree relative with bilateral breast cancer at any age;
  5. A combination of at least two first- or second-degree relatives with ovarian cancer regardless of age at diagnosis;
  6. A first- or second-degree relative with both breast and ovarian cancer at any age; or
  7. A history of breast cancer in a male relative; or
  8. For women of Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry, having one first-degree relative or two second-degree relatives on the same side of the family with breast or ovarian cancer at any age.

For more information about genetic counseling services at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital, or for patient scheduling, please contact Dr. Jonathan Clyman at 458-4749 or email jclyman@slchospital.org

  HCAHPS Update

Enhancing the perception of care and services at SLCH has always been our goal.

For 2011, it’s even more important, with a re-awakened organizational focus on four key areas:

1. Focusing on greeting patients, visitors and colleagues with a simple, “Hello” and eye contact.

2. Renewed focus on phone etiquette, knowing that how we speak with people on the phone sets the tone for their perception.

3. Focusing on inquiring, “Is there anything more that I can do for you?” for our patients, their visitors and colleagues.

4. Hourly rounding on all SLCH nursing units.

  Radiation Safety

There have been recent reports in the news regarding the dangers of radiation exposure from diagnostic imaging equipment, specifically from CT Scanners (Computed Tomography). St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital takes extraordinary radiation safety measures.

Please view the Radiation Safety Fact Sheet for more information. Any questions, please call Director of Radiology, Joe Surace at 568-2136 or jsurace@slchospital.org. Or for additional copies, please contact Liz Zurlnick, Marketing Specialist, at 568-2232 or ezurlnick@slchospital.org

  Pharmaceutical News

Drug shortages continue to be a problem nationally and here at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital. Recent shortages, specifically dopamine, norepinephrine and dipyridamole, have led pharmacy staff to obtain more costly alternatives to minimally impact patient care. The SLCH pharmacy staff requests your continued patience and cooperation as these shortages arise and are resolved.

Pharmacy staff is also actively upgrading their automated dispensing system. The upgraded version will increase the safety of refilling Pyxis units as scanners for barcodes will be used. The goal is for nursing to be able to line up their withdrawal from any computer instead of waiting at the cabinet. Other 2011 pharmacy projects include drug/patient barcoding at bedside, increased use of CPOE, and the implementation of electronic MARs. All of these initiatives will help to enhance patient safety and save time.

For more information, please contact Katie Taylor Boyd at 568-2835 or email kboyd@slchospital.org.
