SLCH employee gives patient shoes off his own feet
Newburgh, NY - St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital (SLCH) is proud to announce Stephen Lepak, RN in the Emergency Department as the August Star of the Month. Stephen has been a dedicated and caring member of the SLCH family since 2009.
During a recent overnight shift, Stephen was caring for a patient involved in a tractor trailer rollover accident. The patient had no injuries, however, his clothes and shoes were soaked in diesel fuel. The patient was in town from Michigan, and did not have access to clothing. Stephen provided the patient with donated clothes, including the shoes off of his own feet. The man became tearful at his kindness and put on the shoes. Stephen proceeded to put on a pair of slipper socks and without hesitation walked to his car in the rain.
“This amazing act of kindness is more than the necessary responsibilities found in Stephen’s job description,” said Barbara Hermance, Clinical Nurse Manager for the Emergency Department. “This is an example of the extraordinary standards our nurses hold themselves to.”
SLCH employees are nominated for the Star of the Month award by their co-workers, patients, physicians and/or visitors, based on Stellar Service Standards. These standards focus on making customers feel comfortable and important, providing timely and compassionate service and improving communication with our patients and staff.
