Hospital Hosts Celebration for Premature Babies all Grown Up

Newburgh, NY - St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital’s (SLCH) Auxiliary recently hosted the 14th Annual Elaine Kaplan Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Birthday Party at Chadwick Lake Park in Newburgh. Nearly 150 guests attended including former patients and their families. Also, in attendance were hospital board members, administrators and local philanthropist, William Kaplan. Children enjoyed face painting, cotton candy and snow cones, as parents spoke about their positive experiences, and staff members shared a hug while getting reacquainted with families.

Dr. Prabhakar Kocherlakota (Dr. KP) shared a few laughs while coloring with some former patients at SLCH. “Caring for the tiniest of patients is a big job, our professional staff works together to provide compassionate care those patients and their families require. It is a pleasure to be here today and to see the children happy and healthy.”

Since its inception in 1997, the NICU has cared for more than 3,000 premature infants and term newborns with infections, birth defects, breathing difficulties, and growth restriction. The Level II Unit in Orange County with a transport service for critically ill babies born at hospitals without neonatal expertise is named for the late Elaine Kaplan, a local philanthropist who, along with her family, identified the need for enhanced health care for infants in this community.

Craig and Christine Wittenberg hold their daughter Julia as they celebrate and thank Dr. KP for saving their daughter’s life.

Eileen Osterby, Chair of the Auxiliary Board, expressed excitement in hosting the annual event. “It is our pleasure to celebrate with the children and parents whose lives have been touched by the dedicated care givers who create miracles every day. We’re delighted so many families return each year to reconnect and celebrate.”

William Kaplan, local philanthropist and husband of the late Elaine Kaplan, stands with daughter Amy, Sue Sullivan, Vice President of  Advancement and Government Affairs, Jill Cappa, Auxiliary Board Member and Event Chair, after they helped the children blow out the candles at the 14th Annual Elaine Kaplan NICU Birthday Party.

Jeano Palmer and Jessica Mello reminisce and celebrate the life of their daughter, Jesseninia, with Joan Cusack-McGuirk, SLCH Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, and Sue Sullivan, Vice President of Advancement and Government Affairs.

Festivities included a visit by Ronald McDonald, lunch, face painting and activities. Donations for the celebration came from businesses including Hannaford Supermarket (Route 32, New Windsor), Price Chopper (Temple Hill Road, Vails Gate), Shop Rite (Route 32, Newburgh), Shop Rite (Vails Gate) and Adams Fairacre Farms (Newburgh).
