St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital (SLCH) is proud to announce Stephen Lepak, RN in the Emergency Department as the August Star of the Month. During a recent overnight shift, Stephen was caring for a patient involved in a tractor trailer rollover accident. |
The patient had no injuries, however, his clothes and shoes were soaked in diesel fuel. The patient was in town from Michigan, and did not have access to clothing. Stephen provided the patient with donated clothes, including the shoes off of his own feet. The man became tearful at his kindness and put on the shoes. Stephen proceeded to put on a pair of slipper socks and without hesitation walked to his car in the rain.
“This amazing act of kindness is more than the necessary responsibilities found in Stephen’s job description,” said Barbara Hermance, Clinical Nurse Manager for the Emergency Department. “This is an example of the extraordinary standards our nurses hold themselves to.”
Congratulations Stephen!

As the summer comes to an end and going back to school is on parents’ minds, here are some backpack fitting tips to help you and your child find the perfect fit. Buy a pack with wide, padded shoulder straps. Make sure the straps are long enough. |
Never put more weight in a pack than you can comfortably carry. You should carry roughly 15 percent of your weight or less in a pack. Anymore and your posture will change to accommodate the weight load and this can result in back strain and injury. Position your pack low on your back. You should never wear your pack too high because this can increase shoulder and neck pain. Adjust the hip belt correctly. Your pack should rest right above your hip bones. The hip belt serves as a bounce reducer, helps distribute the weight load evenly and helps keep the pack comfortably in place. Use both straps to carry your pack. This is a must especially for children, who have a tendency to fling their pack over one shoulder. Using just one strap increases the amount of back pain and discomfort you are likely to experience. Typically if you are able to stand up straight and comfortably when using your pack, you have a good fit.

403(b) - How Can Recent Tax Cuts Benefit Your Retirement?
In mid-December 2010, President Obama signed the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act of 2010 to keep tax breaks alive and help the average worker. The Act reduces employee 2011 Social Security payroll taxes from 6.2% to 4.2%. This could add up to a savings of almost $1,000 for the average U.S. employee. What this means for you is 2% of the money that normally is automatically taken from your paycheck to pay Social Security now stays with you. Why not consider taking that extra 2% and investing it in your 403(b) to help enhance your retirement benefit?
Visit our 403(b) representative, Anthony Sambrato from Hamilton Cavanaugh (schedule below) to find out how easy it is to increase your contribution. Anthony can also be contacted directly at 1-800-433-9832 or via e-mail at anthonys@hamcav.com.
