Stephen R. Shearer passed away on Friday, July 29, 2011, at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence, Newburgh. He was born April 25, 1959 in Cornwall. He is survived by his wife Melanie and his son Eric.
Steve graduated from Cornwall Central High School in 1977, received his B.S. from the Albany College of Pharmacy in 1982. He was currently pursuing his Doctorate from the University of Florida.
He was an active member of Cornwall Presbyterian Church. He also worked closely with the Habit for Humanity organization and many other charitable organizations.
Steve has been a member of our SLCH family since 1999, when he joined as a staff Pharmacist. He was promoted to Pharmacy Supervisor. He became the IT Analyst Pharmacist in 2007 and was promoted to Pharmacy Manager within the same year.
He was a pleasure to work with and the staff in the Pharmacy continues to feel the loss of their manager and friend. He leaves behind many friends here at SLCH and in the community. He faced challenges, both in his life and career, with grace, intelligence, and his trademark sense of humor. He touched so many lives, his presence will be missed.
Contributions in Steve's memory may be made to the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence, 1 Sunrise Lane, Newburgh, NY 12550, or Cornwall Presbyterian Church, 222 Hudson St., Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY 12520 |

St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital (SLCH) is proud to announce Eva Persaud, OB Technician in the Birthing Center as the September Star of the Month. During a recent shift, Eva heard screams from the bathroom while working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). She responded immediately and found a mother who had just delivered one of her twins.
|
Without delay, Eva aided the mother and gave care to the newborn baby while proceeding to call the Labor and Delivery staff who rushed the mother to the Birthing Center. Eva’s quick action resulted in a very happy ending and two beautiful, healthy babies.
“Eva consistently goes above and beyond in her day to day job duties,” said Kathy Sellick, Clinical Nurse Manager of NICU and the Birthing Center. “Her kind and caring nature is an asset to the Birthing Center and all the patients she has contact with.”
Congratulations, Eva!

SLCH’s annual Gala was held on Saturday, September 10 at Torches on the Hudson. The Gala honored the St. Luke’s Cornwall Auxiliary and raised more than $100,000 towards programs and services at the hospital. This black tie event hosted nearly 500 people including hospital leadership, elected officials, and community members at large. The affair featured gaming tables, a silent auction and the Wealth for Health Raffle. SLCH President and CEO Allan E. Atzrott surprised the guests by announcing the dedication of the new lobby to the SLC Auxiliary. A special thank you to everyone who made this night possible!

SLCH hosted more than 60 physicians, community leaders and employees for the ribbon cutting of the new Laboratory. Allan E. Atzrott welcomed guests and talked about the new features available in the lab, including a state of the art microbiology suite, blood bank suite, waiting area for outpatient phlebotomy and updated office areas, break room and storage room. The new space, designed to accommodate advanced technology, provides better work flow, resulting in shorter wait times. Food and drinks were provided by Food & Nutrition and the Laboratory staff provided tours to all who were interested.
SLCH welcomed more than 200 guests to the 14th Annual Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Birthday Party at Chadwick Lake Park in Newburgh. Children enjoyed face painting, cotton candy and snow cones, as parents spoke about their positive experiences. Since its inception in 1997, the NICU has cared for more than 3,000 premature infants and term newborns with infections, birth defects, breathing difficulties, and growth restriction. Overall, the NICU Birthday Party was a huge success.
Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate!
The ninth annual New York State Hospital Report Card from watchdog group, Niagara Health Quality Coalition, was released on September 4 revealing SLCH’s coveted three-star rating for cardiac care.
The report card uses 48 procedures and outcomes to grade the state’s hospitals, with the goal of improving overall health care throughout New York. The cardiac center at SLCH Center for Cardiac Care has a well-below average death rate for patients with congestive heart failure, making it one of the top centers in the state, and placing SLCH’s name on the “honor roll.”
SLCH is very proud of the cardiac center for receiving this great award.
Congratulations!

After his sister-in-law was diagnosed with cancer, Flynn Donohoe became determined to fight against cancer in the most unique of ways. He has partnered with the American Cancer Society to raise money for cancer awareness by biking the perimeter of the United States from California to Florida! His remarkable journey began on January 29 in Tracey, California. During the week of August 22, he arrived at the Littman Cancer Center. He was given a tour, a sandwich and a bottle of water, and asked for nothing more than to have his picture taken in front of the cancer center. To find out more about Flynn’s incredible journey, or to donate to the cause, visit his website.
The Second Annual Littman Cancer Center Car Show was held on Sunday, July 21, and despite the rain, it was a great day! There were numerous Mustangs, Camaros and even an old Mini Cooper Station Wagon in attendance! In addition to the cars, there was a health fair in which the following departments participated; Sleep, Home Care, Littman Cancer Center, Pain Management, Cardiac, Physical Therapy and the Volunteer program. SLCH President and CEO, Allan E. Atzrott presented the CEO Choice Trophy to the car he claimed was “the only thing there older than him!” Big thanks to Alan Southwell and the Mustang Club for all their hard work!

Autumn is here and raking up all those leaves can be hard on your back. Try these tips: Use a curved handle ergonomic rake, take frequent breaks, gently return to an upright position, consider a mulching lawn mower/tractor, |
take a hot shower or use ice to relax muscles and simply avoid bending too much.

Are you saving enough for your retirement?
In mid-December 2010, President Obama signed the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act of 2010 to keep tax breaks alive and help the average worker. The Act reduces employee 2011 Social Security payroll taxes from 6.2% to 4.2%. This could add up to a savings of almost $1,000 for the average US employee. What this means for you is 2% of the money that normally is automatically taken from your paycheck to pay Social Security now stays with you. Why not consider taking that extra 2% and investing it in your 403(b) to help enhance your retirement benefit?
Visit our 403(b) representative, Anthony Sambrato from Hamilton Cavanaugh (schedule below) to find out how easy it is to increase your contribution. Anthony can also be contacted directly at 1-800-433-9832 or via e-mail at anthonys@hamcav.com.
