August Tip of the Month from our Physical Therapy Department

 Tip from Physical Therapy

As the summer comes to and end and going back to school is on parents’ minds, here are some backpack fitting tips to help you and your child find the perfect fit. Buy a pack with wide, padded shoulder straps. Make sure the straps are long enough. Never put more weight in a pack than you can comfortably carry. You should carry roughly 15 percent of your weight or less in a pack. Anymore and your posture will change to accommodate the weight load and this can result in back strain and injury. Position your pack low on your back. You should never wear your pack too high because this can increase shoulder and neck pain. Adjust the hip belt correctly. Your pack should rest right above your hip bones. The hip belt serves as a bounce reducer, helps distribute the weight load evenly and helps keep the pack comfortably in place. Use both straps to carry your pack. This is a must especially for children, who have a tendency to fling their pack over one shoulder. Using just one strap increases the amount of back pain and discomfort you are likely to experience. Typically if you are able to stand up straight and comfortably when using your pack, you have a good fit.

Fire Safety in the Kitchen

Tip from Physical Therapy

Fire Safety Tips:

  • Cook only where it is permitted.
  • Stay in the kitchen when cooking food on the stovetop.
  • Cook only when you are alert and not sleepy or drowsy.
  • To put out a small pan fire, slide a lid over the pan and turn off the burner – keep the pan covered until it is completely cool.
  • If a fire starts in a microwave, keep the door closed and unplug the unit – don’t try to remove the burning item from the microwave.
  • Check with your school or the local Fire Department to make sure BBQ grills are allowed before you use one.

MEDCO MERGES WITH EXPRESS SCRIPTS

Medco, SLCH’s prescription drug service, is now a part of the Express Scripts Family.

What this mean to you:

  • Beginning September 1, you will start to see the Express Scripts name in some of our member communications and mailings, including any Explanation of Benefits (EOBs) you may receive. You will see both the Medco and Express Script names as the two companies work through the transition.
  • Your prescription benefits will not change as a result of the merger. There will be no disruptions in your prescription service.   You will have access to the same medications, mail order, and clinical experts.
  • Medco prescription cards and refill order forms will remain valid.  You will not be receiving new ID cards at this time.  The customer service telephone number on the back of your Medco ID card will remain the same.
  • You can continue to fill your prescriptions at the same Medco in-network pharmacies, such as Walgreens.  Effective 9/15/2012, Walgreens will also become an in-network pharmacy with Express Scripts.
  • The Medco website will remain the same. You can continue to use www.medco.com.

You can also continue to enjoy the Medco phone application, available for Blackberry and Android smart phones. The app offers convenient access to Medco services when you’re on the go.

  • Refill and renew your prescriptions directly from your phone.
  • Immediately access your prescription ID card information.
  • Set alerts to remind you when your prescriptions are running low, when to take your medication, and warn you of potential drug interactions with the innovative “Medicine Cabinet” function.

SLCH believes the merger will provide even greater savings, care, and convenience for our employees.
